TWO URGENT SCHOLARSHIPS

I have been given some information on two scholarships that have deadlines within the next two weeks. I am sorry for the short notice but didn't want to miss the opportunity to get them out to you.

The first is the PEO Star Scholarship. A local organization approached me to help them find candidates that they can nominate for the scholarship which is worth $2500. This scholarship is on for females graduating in 2019 and their nominee will come from La Cueva High School which narrows the candidates down to about 200! You have to have an unweighted GPA of 3.0-4.0. The full application requirements can be found here. All application materials must be turned in to the La Cueva Counseling Office by September 21, 2018 at 2:30pm.

The second scholarship is actually due next week...again I'm sorry about the short notice but it was just shared with me. The scholarship website is https://www.bryancameroneducationfoundation.org/cameron-impact-scholarship

The applicant must:

  • Prioritize academic excellence (maintaining a minimum cumulative unweighted 3.7 grade point average/4.0 scale or equivalent in their high school studies);
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America;
  • Be in the high school graduating Class of 2019, planning to enroll in a full-time course of study toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university for the full academic year following high school graduation;
  • Excel in a broad variety of extracurricular activities. This includes, but is not limited to: athletics, academic clubs, music lessons, performance art, and philanthropic organizations;
  • Be motivated leaders with a strong work ethic and social acumen. Scholars rise to the occasion and are both candid and confident;
  • Demonstrate active participation in community service and in civic-minded arenas, exhibiting an appreciation for the world outside themselves and a belief in their own capacity to effect change on scales both large and small;
  • And submit by the Application Deadline:
    • Online Application,
    • Two (2) required Letters of Recommendation* (these letters MUST be submitted prior to the Application Deadline for an Application to be considered complete), and
    • Transcript (unofficial is fine) certifying academic performance.

I know I just created some extra work for some of you but it is completely worth the time if you get the scholarship!

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Your Senior Year!

Welcome to your Senior Year Class of 2019!  I will be communicating with you and your parents a lot this year to let you know about important dates, deadlines, special events and scholarships. To do this I need a quick and easy way to get information to all of you at once. I will utilize the School Messenger program that allows me to send emails out to parents who have email addresses in our system but I also like to use remind.com. This service allows anyone to sign up to receive text message and/or email messages. I never see your phone number or email address but you will receive my messages and you can opt out at any time.  To get started follow the instructions below.

Counselors will be meeting with all Seniors on Monday, September 10th during senior English classes and I will hold a parent meeting that same night to share the information with parents. This meeting will be in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) starting at 6:00 p.m.

As always, if you have any questions please send me a quick email at debra.chandler@aps.edu and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

I sent an email to all parents through School Messenger on August 23rd. If you did not get it, please read message below  and check your contact information in your ParentVUE account.

Make Sure You Take Your ACT/SAT

Seniors, if you have not taken an ACT or SAT yet, now is the time to sign up!  There are a lot of schools and scholarships that have December 1st deadlines and they often require an ACT/SAT score.  It typically takes 3-5 weeks for colleges to receive your scores so we really want students to take the exam at least once by November.

The next available ACT is on October 27th and the deadline to sign up is October 27th. There is an ACT on September 8th but you will need to pay the late fee to sign up for that one.

There are two upcoming SATs, October 6th and November 3rd. The deadline for the October 6th is September 6th and the deadline to sign up for the November 3rd is October 5th

Students need to sign up to take these exams via the organization's websites (see below), they do not sign up for these at the school.

If you qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Lunch, there are fee waivers available.  Students who qualify can take each test two times for free, they just need to ask their Counselor for a fee waiver.

Finally, the LCHS PTA will be holding an ACT prep class and practice test at the end of September. The prep class will be on Tuesday, September 25th from 6:00-8:00pm and the practice test will be on Saturday September 29th from 8:00am-12:00pm.  This opportunity allows students to experience how the test is laid out/how the questions are asked, determine what they need to work on and learn test taking strategies. The cost is $20 and the PTA will be signing students up on September 24th and 25th during lunch outside the Counseling Office.  Students can pay with cash or check made payable to LCHS PTA.

Financial Aid

Starting on October 1st, you can apply for Federal Financial Aid for the 2019-20 academic year through the https://fafsa.gov/  website.  Make sure you are using 2017 taxes and are using the .gov site.  NEVER pay money to file the FAFSA which stands for FREE Application for Federal Student Aid.  If you need help, email Mrs. Chandler at debra.chandler@aps.edu and she can set up an appointment to meet with you and complete your application.

Mrs. Chandler will be going over the FAFSA and Financial Aid process on October 1st from 6:00-7:30pm in the PAC. This presentation will allow you to understand how the application works and what to watch out for in an effort to save time by submitting a complete and correct application the first time.

Also, don't forget to use the image below to determine which parent's information to use on the FAFSA if your parents are not married to each other.

Get Ready to Apply Presentation Information

Thank you to all the parents and students who attended my presentation on February 26, 2018.  As promised here is the PowerPoint and handouts that will be helpful to all of you throughout the rest of this semester, the summer and the beginning of the senior year.

One reminder, please make sure you/your student is signed up to take the ACT or SAT in March or April.  They can also take the exam(s) in June but if they wait until September or October we sometimes don't get scores back in time to meet some admissions and scholarship deadlines.  To sign up for the exams visit http://www.actstudent.org/ for the ACT or https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register for the SAT.
