Our School

History of Our School

La Cueva High School opened its doors in the fall of 1986 with 1200 juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. From the beginning, Principal Allen Krumm and the staff of 70 were committed to the motto “Where Excellence is a Habit.” Currently, La Cueva is an increasingly diverse, large comprehensive high school with an enrollment of approximately 1,800 students. 48% of our students are Caucasian, 36% are Hispanic, 11% are Asian, 2% are Native American and 2% are African American. We accept transfer students from all over the district resulting in nearly 15% of our population coming from outside La Cueva’s boundaries. 16% of La Cueva’s students participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program and receive additional support, if needed, to ensure full access to all of La Cueva’s elective and extra-curricular offerings.

La Cueva is accredited by AdvancED and the State of New Mexico Department of Education. La Cueva adheres to the National Association of College Admissions Counselors Statement of Principles of Good Practice and is a member of the College Board. La Cueva has consistently received an ‘A’ Letter grade from the NM PED, and has repeatedly been recognized by The US News and World Report as a top high school in the state and country. La Cueva has also been recognized as a National PTA School of Excellence.

La Cueva has a broad range of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities as well as athletics programs. The intertwined structure of student government provides an umbrella for student organizations and activities which complement the academic program, performing groups, those which promote school spirit, service clubs, recreational groups and special interest clubs. The school offers co-curricular performing programs in band, chorus, orchestra, drama, dance and speech and debate. Our music programs have won numerous state championships and regularly receive invitations to perform at prestigious events. Many former Bears have gone on to have very successful acting and/or music careers.

La Cueva High School sits on 48 acres of multi-use facilities supporting 21 interscholastic athletic programs. Our highly successful athletics teams have earned 126 team state championships (as of May 2018) and numerous individual state championships. In 2017 we were ranked 5th in the nation by MaxPreps for our school’s athletic program which carried an average GPA of 3.3. Countless athletes have gone on to play at the collegiate level, and many have spent time in the pro ranks.

La Cueva High School is best known for its highly rigorous and varied curricular offerings. We lead the district in Advanced Placement offerings and college-qualifying scores. We also offer a highly competitive AP Capstone program and support student involvement in dual credit programs to give interested students a college head-start. Students rotate through 7 classes under a block scheduling format. The extended class time is especially beneficial for classes which are lab or project focused, but also provides increased opportunities for collaborative teacher planning. Departmentalization affords teachers the opportunity to build comprehensive and consistent programs meeting the needs of all of our students. The Special Education department at La Cueva serves a multitude of diverse student populations and strives to encourage participation in campus-life at each student’s highest level of ability and interest.

Ultimately, our Mission Statement, La Cueva High School prepares students to become World-Ready, Able Leaders and Contributors…#WALC, drives our desire to meet all of our students where they are at when they walk onto our campus. From AP Computer Science to pre-calculus, from French to Bible as Literature, from Environmental Club to our amazing Best Buddies program, there is something for everyone at La Cueva High School!
