The Career & Technical Education Department was created at La Cueva High School to provide an interdisciplinary pathway for the life-long learner. With modern technologies playing a major role in the educational process, students participate in hands-on learning experiences, which assist them in developing marketable skills. The department works closely within a technology alliance, which includes educational institutions, businesses, and governmental agencies at the local, state, and national levels. This alliance allows for the students to be taught in an environment that is consistent with industry standards and allows them to gain marketable skills, which can be utilized, regardless of their chosen post-secondary pathway. Various courses utilize “vendor neutral” (i.e., generic concepts which can be implemented regardless of the manufacturer of the networking equipment or software) assessment tools to demonstrate credentials to potential employers. AP COMPUTER SCIENCE A

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 1 or higher or permission of instructor. AP Computer science requires strong logical-reasoning skills. It is recommended that the student have successfully completed at least one honors math course. No prior experience with computer programming is necessary.
Special Requirements: Students must have access to a computer during out-of-school hours, on which they can install software and complete course assignments.
Description: AP Computer Science A is an introductory course equivalent of a first-semester college-level course in computer science. The course emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving through the design and implementation of appropriate algorithms and data structures. In the course, the student is expected to code fluently in an object-oriented paradigm using the programming language Java. The student is expected to be familiar with and be able to use standard Java library classes from the AP Java subset. In addition, the student should be able to read and understand a large program consisting of several classes and interacting objects as well as read and understand a description of the design and development process leading to such a program. Also emphasized throughout the course is the ability to recognize ethical and social implications of computer use.

Description: Business Communications & Technology I focuses on computer technology in the business world. In addition to exploring information technologies the student gains knowledge of basic management functions in both business and personal life, masters communications skills, investigates leadership skills, researches career opportunities and identifies workplace expectations. Successful completion of both Business Communication & Technology I & II satisfy the Communication Skills requirement for graduation

BUSINESS COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGY II

Description: Computer Applications for Business Technology focuses on the working knowledge of the computer as a tool to create professional documents, spreadsheets and charts, presentations, databases, web pages, research, and communication via the Internet. Topics of discussion include Communication Skills, Information Technology, Math Literacy, Career Development and Employability Skills.

Description: Students will be introduced to the elements and principles of design and how these are used in a computer published document. Using advanced graphics and desktop publishing software students will create a variety of publications for the purpose of communicating information to an audience. In addition, students will have the opportunity to create graphic layouts using high-end digital scanners and digital cameras. During the final six weeks, students will be introduced to HTML programming and web page design.

DESKTOP PUBLISHING II

Prerequisite: Desktop Publishing I with a “C” or better and/or permission of instructor.
Special Requirements: Lab fee of $10.00 per semester may be charged.
Description: This class will build on the technical and design skills developed in Desktop Publishing I. Students will learn advanced techniques using high-end graphics and desktop publishing programs. Publications will be created for real-world use by producing many of the school and local community documents. Calendars, fliers, brochures, newsletters, etc., are just a few of the possible projects that students will create. Students will be expected to apply good design and layout principles to publications appropriate for the intended audience. Students may be required to assist in completion of the Yearbook.

YEARBOOK 1, 2 & 3

Prerequisite: 3.0 GPA or better in Desktop Publishing, an average of 3.0 GPA or better in English. Yearbook advisor approval.
Special Requirements: This course meets requirements for practical arts credit. After school time is required for students. Students must apply for and receive yearbook advisor approval. Student should have a 3.0 GPA before applying.
Description: Yearbook applies the skills of pre-planning, scheduling, copy writing, cropping, headline writing, layout, photography, art and graphics, theme selection, distribution, and business management to produce the school yearbook. Much of the work is done outside the class. The course is designed for long-term group projects using the computer as a tool. The learner will solve problems requiring integration of skills and knowledge from a variety of disciplines. Succeeding levels of this course will expect students to meet objectives by increasing the difficulty and complexity of their project focus.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANT I, II, III

Prerequisite: One (1) year computer course and/or demonstration of computer knowledge and permission of Instructor.
Special Requirements: None
Description: Students will become familiar with hardware and software on site, and will be able to perform some preventive maintenance on the equipment. Students will be introduced to computer operations. Students will expand the depth and breadth of their knowledge and abilities by demonstrating objectives on a higher level of ability and on different types of equipment.

Description: In CAD Engineering I, the student studies the process of converting ideas and designs into technical drawings and communicates these ideas through drafting techniques. The student achieves understanding of the design and communication process by understanding traditional drafting techniques and increasing productivity through the use of computers. Career interests are explored.

CAD ENGINEERING DRAFTING II

Description: In CAD Engineering II, the student utilizes the computer to learn advanced drafting techniques while applying drafting theories and standards to solve design problems. The student focuses on the integration of general employability skills with the course design problems.

Description: In CAD Architecture I, the student develops drafting techniques to study the basic principles of residential building design and construction with an emphasis on measurement, basic CAD commands, and employability skills. The student produces hand drawn and/or computer generated designs and projects. Career interests are explored.

CAD ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING II

Description: In CAD Architecture II, the student develops a set of house plans using computers in drawing and problem-solving activities. The student incorporates advanced commands into his/her projects and integrates general employability skills with architectural coursework. Students develop representative architectural working drawings using appropriate conventions of graphics, dimensions, and notation systems.

CAD ENGINEERING III – DIRECTED STUDIES

Prerequisite: Successful completion of CAD Engineering II, Administration & CAD teacher recommendation.
Special Requirements: Individual plan required, to be approved by instructor, parent and student. A lab/materials fee of $20.00/year may be charged.
Description: The student pursues advanced directed study in an area of Engineering graphics, building on the skills developed in CAD Engineering I & II. The student produces a project(s) which demonstrates knowledge of Engineering content guided by the Instructor. He/She has the ability to work independently, to form goals, become familiar with careers and develop work habits of professionals.

CAD ENGINEERING IV - INDEPENDENT STUDIES

Prerequisite: Successful completion of CAD Engineering III.
Special Requirements: The student requires approval by instructor, parent/guardian and school administrator before he/she pursues the study. Lab/materials fee of $20.00/year may be charged.
Description: The student pursues advanced individual study in an area of Engineering graphics through an industry work-site experience or through an independent and instructor guided project. The student assumes responsibility for identifying, pursuing, and culminating an activity that expands knowledge about some phase of the Engineering industry. He/She researches career fields and employability requirements that fit the skills developed in this course.

PC TROUBLESHOOTING, MAINTENANCE, AND UPGRADING CLASS

Description: This course studies the operation, maintenance, and upgrading of personal computers. The goal of the class is for students to identify basic components of a personal computer, develop basic troubleshooting techniques, install basic hardware and software, and perform preventative maintenance on standard PC’s. Furthermore, students will participate in real work experiences associated to desktop support and discover careers associated with computers. Students split their time between the classroom and in the field, working on the school’s computers and supporting our Networking Class. Students will be working on a live network as they are exposed to the many components of Network Management and hardware issues. The course is designed to train students in problem solving. They will have the opportunity to use a variety of tools and techniques to solve PC issues. In addition to solving hardware issues student will learn about computer; security, ethics, software, hardware, and business.

PC TROUBLESHOOTING, MAINTENANCE, AND UPGRADING LAB

Description: This course provides students with the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and experiences in troubleshooting, maintaining, and upgrading personal computers necessary to gain entry-level employment in the computer industry. Students will participate in real work experiences associated to computer desktop support.

Description: Investigating Multiple Pathways and Careers (IMPAC) is divided into four quarters which allows the student to explore several career pathways and multiple occupations using a global approach. The course focuses on careers (e.g., arts and entertainment, business services, health and biosciences) and the planning and operations that are necessary to manage any enterprise. The student experiences hands-on activities, teamwork, and collaboration by working on a culminating project that varies from year to year based on topics, student interest, and teacher expertise. Employability, academic, and literacy skills are emphasized and integrated throughout the curriculum. Emphasis is placed on appropriate research techniques, application of mathematical concepts, and technical writing. Students will work with a number of business computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and multimedia applications. This career exploration with life skills provides the student with direction in developing an academic plan. Students will be highly encouraged to join a Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) as well as participate in any local, state, or national competitions that may be available. Teachers will provide student information on CTSO’s.

E-COMMERCE: A MULTIMEDIA APPROACH

Description: In this course the student studies various electronic marketing tools. Web business concepts are developed through research, design, and construction using a variety of programming languages (e.g., HTML, Java). The course provides an in-depth analysis of the impact that the Internet has on marketing functions and foundations and facilitates the student’s understanding of software and Internet capabilities, providing opportunities to develop web sites for selling goods/services/ideas. The student works with general marketing and economic strategies to build and integrate a shopping cart and other business needs on a firewalled web server in order to maximize return and meet customer expectations with electronic purchases. The student learns about business principles of e-commerce, personal and business services online, buying online, doing business on the web, and developing an e-commerce web site. This course integrates reading, speaking, writing, and research through the use of business concepts, presentations, and computer technology. The student designs, writes, and produces computer-based multimedia projects.

COMPUTER NETWORKING COURSES

Our Computer Networking Program offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working on La Cueva’s multi-million dollar network. Our servers, clients, network components and software rivals most hardware and software found in industry today. Our network architecture is well defined and is kept up to date by our students. Students work in an environment that resembles most work places. The only expectation is that they are not paid. Students work on real problems, real-time, and with real customers. A number of our students have been able to transfer their education and training into paying, part-time jobs or internships while they were in school.

COMPUTER NETWORKING I

Prerequisite: Previous computer experience and permission of the instructor.
Special Requirements: Previous experience with computer hardware and software installation.
Description: Topics will include: Introduction of Networking and Introduction to Local Area Networks. It will provide students with hands on experience in setting up, troubleshooting, and managing the components of a local area network. Upon completion of the course the students will be able to install and manage a local area network. During the second semester the students will put their skills to use assisting in the maintenance of the school’s local area network (LAN). In Managing and Maintaining a Local Area Network students split their time between the classroom and in the field, working on the school’s network. Students will be working on a live network as they are exposed to the many components of Network Management. The course is designed to train students in the main areas of network management, including security, ethics, software, hardware, and business.

COMPUTER NETWORKING II, III

Prerequisite: Computer Networking I and/or permission of the instructor.
Special Requirements: Previous experience with computer hardware and software installation.
Description: Topics will include: Networking Architecture and Wide Area Networks. This course is designed to train students in four main areas of network management, including security, ethics, software and hardware. Students will get hands on training in the following computer networking skills:

  • Using Network Accounts & Applications

  • Electronic Communications

  • Computer Hardware Maintenance

  • LAN/WAN Topology & Hardware

  • Installing & Using Network Software

This course will be taught through discussion, case studies, and simulations on the students’ server. Here at La Cueva students are also given the opportunity to learn through hands-on experience as they work on the school’s network. The hardware topics will be taught by repairing school computers throughout the year, and by breaking down and reassembling computers. Students will work on more than just computers; they will assemble and install any hardware that is part of the school’s network. They will work on a variety of network components including; computers, switches, printers, as well as many other network devices. The network software topics will be learned by having the students troubleshoot and solve problems presented to them through case studies. Students will gain hands-on knowledge as they work on Microsoft’s latest software; Server 2003R, Vista, XP, MOM, Office 2007, and more. Other software products worked on include: Symantec’s Anti-Virus Corporate Edition, Symantec’s Ghost, Adobe Creative Suite 3, and more. In addition, the students will install and configure software for each of the types of servers that will be studied.
